Johnson City Detention Facility

Johnson City is somewhat unique in Tennessee because it operates its own detention facility rather than sending all arrestees straight to the county jail. The facility handles short-term holds and processes bookings for city arrests. For longer stays, inmates may be transferred to county or state facilities.

Visitation at the detention facility takes place at Fairmont (old gym), 1405 Lester Harris Road, Johnson City, TN. Visits are on Sundays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. All visitors must fill out a visitation form and submit it to the detention facility with a recent passport photo and a copy of their photo ID.

For felony offender information, you can also use the Tennessee Department of Corrections Felony Offender Information Lookup (FOIL) system. FOIL searches can be done by name, state ID number, race, or TDOC ID number. Results show the person's location, current status, mugshot, and active sentences.

Washington County Booking Records

Public records requests for Washington County go through the Washington County Attorney's Office. They serve as the Public Records Request Coordinator. The office adopted its records policy in May 2016. All requests must be in writing using Form 1 and include proof of Tennessee citizenship.

The mailing address is Washington County Attorney's Office, Post Office Box 555, Jonesborough, Tennessee 37659. Phone: 423-753-4864. Email: tmatthews@washingtoncountytn.org. If you do not provide proof of citizenship, the request will be denied.

Johnson City Booking Fees and Record Retention

Looking at Johnson City booking releases in person costs nothing. That is the law. T.C.A. § 10-7-503 says Tennessee residents can inspect public records for free during business hours. If you want paper copies, the rate is $0.15 per page for black and white. Color copies run $0.50 each. Certified copies from Washington County cost $5.00 per document. Washington County keeps arrest records based on state retention rules. Felony arrest records stay on file with no set end date. Misdemeanor booking data is also kept for a long time. The records sit in the county system and can be pulled up years after the fact. If you are looking for an old Johnson City booking release, the records may still be there. Contact the Washington County Records Division at 100 E. Main Street, Jonesborough, TN 37659 or call 423-753-1644 to ask about older files.

The Johnson City Police Department also keeps its own set of records apart from the county. Crime stats from the department get sent to the FBI for the Uniform Crime Reporting database. This means Johnson City arrest data feeds into both local and national systems. For copies of police reports tied to a booking, reach out to the department at 601 East Main Street or email publicrecords@johnsoncitytn.org.
